HERS Institutes

HERS Institutes Frequently Asked Questions

Am I at the right stage in my career to attend a HERS Institute?
HERS Institute participants generally hold mid- to senior-level positions and bring expertise from many academic disciplines and organizational specialties.  They also represent a range of ethnic and national groups, ages and years of experience in higher education and other related fields.

How many participants can I expect to attend the Institute?
Each of the three HERS Institutes deliberately seeks a diverse group of approximately 70 women leaders to share and learn from their multiple perspectives under the guidance of women faculty from higher education, national organizations, government and foundations.

What do I need in order to apply?
After you enter you enter your email, password and name to start an application and select the Institute for which you would like to apply, you will be taken to a page with application instructions and an application checklist. As you complete each of the following required sections, a check mark will appear by it. Once all sections are complete and have check marks, a new “Submit” button will appear under the application checklist. Both letters of support must be uploaded before you will be able to click the submit button and send your complete application for review.

Does HERS offer scholarships or other forms of financial assistance?
Because HERS is in partnerships with institutions to build a cadre of leaders, our scholarship assistance is directed through institutions rather than to individual participants.  In keeping with HERS curricular goal of engaging individual and institutional diversity, we focus our limited assistance (in the form of tuition discounts) on under-resourced institutions that have been designated as minority-serving or enroll a significant number of first generation college students. Participants representing these institutions should   complete the online application for admission to one of the HERS Institutes and, in a separate email to Shannon Martin-Roebuck (shannon.martin-roebuck@du.edu), indicate that her institution will be submitting a request for tuition assistance.  Requests are considered using the following process:

•  The applicant should notify the office of the president or other senior officer providing a letter of support as part of the HERS application to include a request for tuition assistance in the letter.  This letter should also include a confirmation that the institution is fully supportive of the candidate for admission and will assist her in arranging her time so that she can fulfill all responsibilities of participation.

•  In addition, the officer requesting assistance should be prepared to confirm that the institution’s resources for professional development are limited; generally this means that the institution is not currently providing financial assistance to other faculty or administrators to pursue travel, conference participation or other professional development activities.   If the senior officer has questions about the HERS tuition assistance program, or for other reasons might prefer to discuss the request before submitting a letter of support, Dr. Judith White, HERS President and Executive Director,  would be happy to talk with the sponsoring officer directly.

•  Please note, because the funding available is based on gifts and any operating surpluses realized annually, the amount of assistance that can be offered in any year is extremely limited.  The tuition discount will not exceed half of the tuition charged annually.  Because the goal of the financial assistance is to build the strength and diversity of the HERS Institute classes, priority in awarding partial tuition assistance will reflect different institutional types, regions of the country and ethnicity of participants, depending on the pool of candidates in each class.
